The Herodium is a fortified mountain palace on the outskirts of Jerusalem built by King Herod in the 1st century BCE after his victory over Antigonus at the site. The burial site of Herod has also recently been discovered here. Visiting this desert fortification can be an experience as this palace includes a Roman bathhouse, synagogues, mikvehs, cisterns, and a pool. An example of Herod's extravagant building style was the Roman bathhouse, which included four rooms the changing room, stretching room, steam room and cold bath. Herod also built an aqueduct system running from the lower part of the Herodium and starting at what is called Solomon's pools to Jerusalem, which you can tour. This visit will give you insight into the life and death of King Herod.
